The Sydney Football League (SFL) is New South Wales’ new premier Australian Rules Football competition, launching in April 2027. Nine foundation clubs from across Greater Sydney will compete in senior men’s, senior women’s and two underage grades.

League History

Announced by the AFL on 12 August 2026, with the inaugural season commencing in April 2027. The new premier competition revives the SFL name but has a separate identity from the former SFL and the continuing AFL Sydney community competition.

The inaugural 2027 season will feature Senior Men’s, Senior Women’s, Under 19.5 Men’s and Under 20 Women’s competitions. Each grade is scheduled for 18 rounds, followed by a top-five finals series over four weekends.

The SFL will operate separately from AFL Sydney, which will continue to provide community football, including additional teams fielded by SFL clubs. There will be no promotion or relegation between the two competitions.

The nine foundation clubs are South West Sydney Blues, St George Dragons, Sydney University, UNSW Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs, UTS Bats, North Shore Bombers, Manly Warringah Wolves, Pennant Hills Demons and East Coast Eagles.
