League History
The Queensland Football League was formed in 1903, with its first premiership season in 1904. The present QAFL structure began in 2014 following a restructure of Queensland community football and the NEAFL.
The competition traces its origins to the Queensland Football League, established in 1903. Norths, Souths and Wests contested the first premiership season in 1904. Queensland’s premier club competition developed from its Brisbane base through several names and governing bodies, with no competition held from 1915 to 1919.
The present QAFL structure began in 2014, bringing four former NEAFL clubs together with six community Division One clubs. Maroochydore joined in 2020, Noosa and Redland–Victoria Point in 2021, and Aspley in 2022. Coorparoo’s arrival in 2025 increased the competition to 13 clubs.
The QAFL is distinct from the former interstate NEAFL and from the separate QAFL Women’s competition.
