History & Records

Club History

Founded in 1870, Port Adelaide entered the South Australian league in 1877 and the AFL in 1997. Its SANFL side is known as the Magpies.

From 1997 to 2010, the SANFL Magpies operated as a separate entity from the AFL club. The clubs reunited at the end of 2010, and the Magpies became the AFL side’s reserves team in 2014. The participation periods on this record distinguish those entities; the separate Magpies years are part of the wider Port Adelaide story.

The South Australian competition was suspended in 1916–1918. During 1942–1944, Port Adelaide and West Torrens played as a combined wartime side. Port Adelaide also missed the 2020 SANFL season because of AFL COVID restrictions, returning in 2021.
