History & Records
Club History
Melbourne was founded in 1858 and was a foundation member of the VFL in 1897. Its senior side did not compete from 1916 to 1918 because of the First World War, returning in 1919.
Melbourne’s current VFL pathway is its alignment with Casey Demons, which began in 2009. Casey remains a distinct club with its own Springvale heritage; the Casey Demons name adopted for 2017 strengthened the partnership without replacing Casey’s separate governance.
